Why Content is King

Posted by dianetinte | 6/30/2009 05:50:00 PM

Imagine the world without anything written on it. No posts, no mails, no advertisement, no reports, no news, and no birthday cards to brighten your day…. nothing. When man made use of writing, he thought of having something for the eyes to see, for the minds to understand and for the hearts to feel the need for love and nurture. Without writing, the world is nothing else but a blank silence of the souls – suppressed and numb.

The internet has been dubbed as the mainstream communication medium where everything is possible and available. But without any mode of writing, the internet is but a click – meaningless and dull. That’s what makes online writing as a venture indispensable and significant in order for the internet to fulfill its role as a communication vessel. With online copy writing or freelance writing, whichever you may call it, the internet became a home to more rewarding enterprise such as web development, search engine optimization, and other forms of work at home activities.

Freelance writers have flourished in the internet for a fortune they could never have with their present jobs. An ordinary writer could finish five to ten articles a day which means $10-$50 dollars without him encountering the hassles of traditional work. Do the math and you will find yourself counting on a huge sum of money right within your homes.

Copywriters, journalists, and any kind of writers have a vast array of opportunities given their persistence to stand out in the fast-paced field. A website cannot exist without writers who fill in the content. The content is one of the most important essences of a site. Web content, for that matter, decides whether a visitor will click in the site or will navigate away to look for another.

The writer is the soul of the website. His role is to provide the site with substantial and meaningful content so that potential revenues will reach their right destinations and businesses will take hold of success.

A website without substantial and meaningful content is nothing. You read it right: content has to have ‘VALUE’ to the target audience. We ourselves are online consumers and for sure, we don’t want to waste our time with meaningless information. Hence, as writers, our goal is not simply to write but to write about quality topics hence giving our readers valuable content.

How to Improve PageRank?

Posted by pinoywebdev | 6/29/2009 11:32:00 PM

I actually asked this myself. How can I improve the PageRank (PR) of my website? My last check gave this blog a PageRank of 1 out of 10 (PR 1/10). I checked Google, Yahoo, facebook and they got 10/10, 9/10 and 9/10 respectively. The No. 1 freelancing site, GetAFreelancer, is only at 5/10.

Seeing these figures, I asked myself again, 'How to improve PageRank' and so I did a search and found out some answers which some are already known to me. I will sum them up below:

1. Provide quality content on your site - the site visitors deserves nothing less

2. Submit site or blog to online directories - some online directories are free while others require small fee. Having our site in directories gives your site exposure.

3. Ask quality sites to link to you - incoming links from quality sites implies that your site is of the same quality as of the source site. These quality sites link to you because your site and their sites share the same level of importance.

Check this out: FREE Link Exchange
4. Review sites before you link to them - search engines, base on rules beyond our control, are blocking sites. If you link to a blocked site, this will greatly affect your PageRank.

5. Last on my list but I'm convinced the most important, your site must exist to help people. Keep your site up to date, keep it with valuable information that offers timeless help to your visitors. You might have help a batch of visitors today and you may still be helping yet another batch of new visitors tomorrow. Keep it that way and traffic will be driven to your site without you knowing it is happening.

Let's do No. 3 though this FREE Link Exchange program

Why BLOG?

Posted by niko | 6/29/2009 01:40:00 PM

I have been asked by friends on this question for so many times. I don’t know if my reply to them really answers that question BUT I have seen a lot of friends who are blogging now after I told them my reasons.

First, my blog serves as my breathing space. I started my blog to release what’s running around my mind. My blog is my online diary, my constant companion in the ups and downs of my life. It is where I can say everything I want to say and I won’t get judged after writing. Oh well, my readers might judge me but who cares! I blog to express myself not theirs! Though their every opinion is noted!

Second; I blog to gain friends. Three years running and I have found little treasures in the blogging world. It is nice to meet someone from every part of the world through modern technology. I have to say I met a lot of wonderful people already through my blog and our friendship continues and will remain even after blogging ends!

Lastly; I blog to earn. Yes, there is really money in blogging. I have to discuss this on my next entry but a 200$ average income a month isn’t bad I tell you! I am earning that part-time and a few of my blogging friends from all over the world is earning more than that!

Long time ago, being a single mom is not something to be proud of. It is beyond the standards of the society as those who set forth supporting the children alone is ridiculed and mocked for reasons I actually don’t want to understand. Yes, the main reason why I fear to be single at first is because I probably won’t be able to send my kids to a good school or give them the luxury they had when we were still depending on their father. But lately, my journey to handling my family in solitude is getting on the smooth rewarding road of freelance writing.

I write. I made use of this talent to feed two beautiful children whom I believe depends on no one else but me. At first, I was hesitant in making this talent a sort of enterprise. I sneaked my way into the haywire with nothing but my hope for the internet to shed light into my hopeless situation. For a while, I get disappointed with not being able to grab the rewards I was expecting as a freelancer. But as I slowly sneaked my way through clients who continue looking for excellent writing, I am dramatically transforming what used to be a hobby into something very satisfying.

Freelance writing is a great opportunity for those who have the talent and the will to transform not just their lives but the lives of those who take a risk in the haywire. Big multinational corporations and even small businesses have tried out their luck in the internet as the global communication mainstream. Having a website online for their products and services is one great opportunity for them to be break out traditional print and broadcast advertising. With a website, the business has more chances of being visited and crowded potential clients. The more visitors, the more chances for the business to flourish

I went on writing for these sites. Clients differ from each other and their preferences are not similar too. But the goal of every freelance writing online is nothing else but to deliver traffic to the website. There are a million people trying out for an online fortune through writing and what makes one dominate from the other? Quality, substance and style – no more, no less. The client can search every corner for a freelance writer but at the end of the day, the articles from the good copywriter will always stand out.

I haven’t yet earned a million fortunes through this work at home engagement but one thing is for sure – being a single mom is no longer a burden on my pocket. I have sustained a decent and comfortable life for my children because I chose to put my writing into something worthwhile.

The global economic crisis has been wittingly dealt with by the internet through providing jobs in which people can acquire within the comforts of their homes. The birth of freelancing online can be traced back for a decade or more yet its flourishing to its peak is now evident as more and more people either opt for the internet to buy or sell their products and services. Freelancing has come into different variety of niche including freelance web designing, freelance photography, freelance consultations, freelance copy writing and freelance search engine optimization.

In any of these ventures, you definitely get the chance of staging your talent and getting paid for it. For freelance writers, the web is greater than any other forms of medium which can compensate the works of the mind as its ideas are logically transformed into words. With the world continuously threatened by recession, an online job will save you from financial distress.
Many freelance writers have developed the love for the job because of its unrivaled rewards. Fancy how you can earn hundreds of dollars by just sitting in front of your computer without even getting into the hassles of dressing up and facing your difficult boss.

Although in some very rare instances, the freelancer is not at all given immunity to fraud. The World Wide Web is not at all a place of absolutely good-hearted people. The risk is usually not getting the compensation for the work. Yet the ill-fated writer, for that matter, can still see a beam of hope because there in the haywire lay more people who know how to recognize your craft.

Remember, everything in this world is not certain so you might as well risk for something worth your time and effort instead of staying slumped into hopelessness doing nothing. Whether you choose to work full time or part time, you do not need to have thousands of capital to start off. Your passion for writing and your desire to alleviate your present condition is perfect tandem in winning your battle against recession.

Building a Website

Posted by pinoywebdev | 6/28/2009 12:07:00 AM

Let's talk about building a website. The internet is a vast array of websites. A website is a collection of web pages. Some websites may have a definite number of web pages while some may have plenty. Others, those with web pages created on the fly may have, literally, infinite number of web pages.

Now, why build a website? Having a website means broadening your market. Having a website means "innovation". Having a website means "business process improvement" and for my own opinion, having a website, above anything else, means: "convenience"

How to build a website?

Today, one is given a number of choices on how to come up with a website. Two of the most common choices are (1) using site builder and (2) hiring a website developer. Non-technical people (as long as they know how to type, copy and paste texts, click here and there) can use site builders to build a website. These site builders are crafted by website developers themselves to make building a website a breeze for busy people but are willing to have online presence.

Talking about site builders versus hiring website developers: which one would you go for? Site builders, as smart as they are still have limits and most are template based. These limitations may be barriers to meet your specific needs. Good things though, are, (1) some site builders are FREE of charge and (2), those that are commercially available may be a lot cheaper than a website developer. Moreover, some site builders are yours lifetime for one time payment.

Having a website developer, on the other hand, offers you: flexibility. One known downside is cost but, with this cost, you can wish for every web page customization you need. A homepage for example, a site builder may be limited to a few format while with a website developer (as he is a person who you can talk to and raise suggestions), you may request for unlimited number of changes till your needs are met.

In building a website, the choice is yours - a site builder tool or a website developer?. Site builder tools are available for download. Search on the internet and you will surely find a tool you will like. Website developers are email or phone call away. There maybe many in your local area. You may consult a company whose business is providing website solutions - website design and development. If your budget is limited then take time to review your options, compare cost from local developers and the cost when you outsource the job to developers offshore. Often, it is always cheaper to outsource the job than having the job done by a developers or companies local to your area.

I myself is getting outsourced jobs. Mostly, web design and development jobs. Some are minor updates to an existing website. For the past 3 years, I've been through different customers with different needs from different countries. I've done both static and dynamic websites. For static ones with 5 pages or less, I charge an average of 100 to 200 US dollars. For dynamic websites (those with database, contact forms, login forms and content management systems or CMS) on the average, I charge around 200 to 500. For more complex projects, I charge higher.

There are many freelancers who are into website design and development. There is no standard fee freelancers ask from customers. It is always the customer's right to choose who they want to work on their website and compensate that freelancer's work.

PHP XML Example

Posted by pinoywebdev | 6/25/2009 01:57:00 PM

In this post, we will look at how we can make an XML document using PHP.

First, what is XML?

XML stands for EXtensible Markup Language. It is a markup language much like HTML but it is important to note that XML does not have a predefined set of tags unlike HTML. You define your own set of tags in an XML document and these tags should be self-descriptive. XML is a W3C recommended standard.
The following is an example of an XML document.
<freelancer>
<codename>pinoywebdev</codename>
<skillset>php, mysql, html, css, javascript, ajax, photoshop</skillset>
<hourlyrate>15 USD</hourlyrate>
</freelancer>

As defined, XML tags should be self-descriptive. From the example, you can really say what each tag means. <freelancer> </freelancer> is our parent container tag telling us about a freelancer. The inner tags: codename, skillset, and hourlyrate clearly tell us what the data they contain.

Websites are making use of XML document to store data which they actually supply as data feeds for other client sites to use. The source website updates their feeds (xml documents) and client websites take, parse these documents and display the data. Hence, we can say that XML is a way to store data for its consumers' use.

How to make an XML using php?

XML is nothing special but a plain text file. That said, you can generate an XML document just how you generate any plain text document.

Here's how you create a text file using php:
$filename = "mytextfile.txt";
$fh = fopen($filename,"w");
$data_to_write = "php xml example by pinoywebdev";
fwrite
($fh, $data_to_write);
fclose
($fh);
This code will give us, mytextfile.txt containing: "php xml example by pinoywebdev"

You are going to use the same php script PLUS a few edits to produce an XML document. Edits you need make are:

1. Give $data_to_write a value that is xml-formatted and
2. Make the file extension appropriate. Use .xml instead of .txt

Let's use our XML example above and so we have:
$filename = "mytextfile.xml";
$fh = fopen($filename,"w");
$data_to_write = "
<freelancer>\r\n";
$data_to_write .= "
<codename>pinoywebdev</codename>\r\n";
$data_to_write .= "
<skillset>php, mysql, html, css, javascript, css, photoshop</skillset>\r\n";
$data_to_write .= "<hourlyrate>15 USD</hourlyrate>\r\n";
$data_to_write .= "</freelancer>\r\n";
fwrite($fh, $data_to_write);
fclose($fh);
I've used string concatenation method for $data_to_write just to make it more pleasing and easy to read. That, somehow, is coder's approach. That's my approach and does not really matter if you do it differently. Also, I added \r\n at the end of each line. This is so that, when I open my xml document using notepad for example, the contents show up line after line and not all in one line.

There you have your xml file!

When to say 'NO' at work

Posted by pinoywebdev | 6/22/2009 09:21:00 AM

Do you know when to say 'NO' at work? Do you know when not to take on a project?

Yes, we are seeking for online jobs. Yes, we do need something to work on and earn money from. But do we know when should we refuse to do a task? Even if it will disappoint the person expecting from us, we should know how to say 'NO' or else, our 'YES' is meaningless and in the end it is our meaningless 'YES' that will make us suffer. Take it, a 'NO' told upfront is way far better than a 'YES'.

Your customer goes to you and ask you to turn a 150 pages word document into an HTML. You are asked to maintain the formatting; bold-faced letters, spacing, links to footnotes and all that stuff. Worst, you're not allowed to use any software to convert the document into an HTML. You are not allowed to open up the document and do 'File>Save As... 'HTML'. Then he says, 'this job is simply encoding so I would expect you not to charge me an arm and a leg' and by that he meant, 'I expect to pay just $30 bucks for it'. Will you say 'YES, I'll do it for you'?

Perhaps, you can have your 'NO' this way: 'Yes, encoding is an easy task but look it's a hundred and fifty pages. It will take me hours to have it done. I will have it if you will pay me my hourly rate.'

I remember my Japanese boss reminding us that in certain occasions we must know how to say 'NO' to our customers. While it is true that saying 'NO' will make them feel bad, that is only temporary and has low impact on your business relationship; a lasting disappointment is when you say 'YES' and not meet any expectations such as timely delivery and quality.

Again, learn when to say 'NO' to your customers.

Online Jobs

Posted by pinoywebdev | 6/19/2009 06:53:00 PM

The search for "Online Jobs" must have brought you here. I too was in search-mode for online jobs especially during my college days. Each one of us has a unique story to tell or reason why we are seeking for online jobs. Let me share a piece of my story and here it goes… (and if you like, you can share me your story by commenting on this entry)

When I was in college, I was employed full time as an AutoCAD operator working from 8AM to 6PM and attending night classes from 7PM to 10PM. My work could have afforded my college expenses but at that time, I already have my own family. I alone was to support my wife and our baby. We didn’t have our own place so we had to rent a small room to accommodate ourselves. The rent and all other expenses are to be shouldered by me alone. Being a salary man and earning a minimum wage, life was really tough!

In our office, we are given internet access and during my idle time, I can really do anything. Being always short of budget pushed me to look for additional source of income. I then found out that the internet is an enormous source of jobs that can be done without requiring me to come to another workplace but do it where I am.

Since then, I have learned of so many other income sources: write an article, write product reviews, post in forums, view sites and click on ads, develop web sites, design banners, work as webmaster, etc.

For the past 2 years, sometimes I have to set some rules like ‘first-come-first-serve’ and during peak seasons, I feel bad doing it but I need to – I say ‘NO’ to my clients. I can’t just take all job orders and in the end, make one client happy and make the rest disappointed.

That said, there are so many jobs online that you can earn from. Below are a few sites that I know of. On these sites, you can find jobs that pay you serious money but of course – no easy money, we have to work for it. Easy money is often times scam or fraud or illegal.

GetAFreelancer

Posted by pinoywebdev | 6/18/2009 04:52:00 PM

I was amazed with the new look and feel of GetAFreelancer website. For more than 3 years, despite of the negative feedback by other GAF users regarding the site’s design – being not that user friendly, among other complaints, I can say that I am one of the most active members of this site.

Today, GetAFreelancer has unveiled its Web 2.0 style. Check it out now.

GetAFreelancer is one of the biggest project outsourcing market today. Starting its presence online in February 2004, to date, US$37.8M have been spent by GetAFreelancer users. It’s a lot of money isn’t it? Register today and grow with us!

I have tried creating an account in GAF's competitor sites but decided to focus at GAF alone. Here, I am able to work with different people from different places like Canada, Australia, US, New Zealand, UK, Philippines, India and other countries.

Share |

Facebook now ranks 4th on “The top 500 sites on the web” by Alexa (http://www.alexa.com/topsites). This could be one of the reasons why individuals, small and large online businesses are making use of fb’s API to integrate their own web applications to facebook. It's great that facebook built this framework and have it FREE for web application developers.

I am fortunate and again, my appreciation goes to the GAF’s quartermaster for giving me the opportunity to develop GetAFreelancer application for facebook.

GetAFreelancer application on facebook, as far as the initial specifications are concerned, is 40% to 50% done. Click here to see this application on facebook.

The concept is simple, it will read an xml feed by GetAFreelancer. The feed contains outsourced projects. The projects are all tailored to GAF user’s skillset.

A few enhancements are being worked on so keep on checking this one for new updates.

Thanks and have a nice weekend!

In this post, I would like to high light a project that's not into programming or web designing which, for sure, ordinary internet users can surely accomplish.

The project description:

I need a few guys to help me get accepted into a few networks, don't bid this if your not speaking english or not familiar with affiliate marketing. send pm to me for details.
(I envy the newbies at GAF for only them can bid on this project - users with no feedback yet)
So if I were picked to do this job, I would ask the project owner to give me list of affiliate networks (URLs basically) to which he wants his program get listed. Having a list from him, I need not worry about sites where to get his affiliate program listed on.

However, if he has no list to provide me, I can go to google and search for "affiliate program directories". These keywords will get me close to websites that are primarily for listing affiliate programs. Next task is to register/create an account in each website, log in to each and fill up the necessary forms to get an affiliate program listed on that website.

Though, it's a bit of work even if no technical expertise is required. My estimate is to take 3-5 days to complete 50 websites. The project that we take as an example has a budget of $750-1500. That means, you can bid as low as $750 or as high as $1500. If I'm eligible to bid on this project, I'll take it at $750 for 5 days.

I am excited about this post, to let you guys know of this good news. This post is a follow up to my other post yesterday regarding GAFcash program - Earn great money with GetAFreelancer freelance ads!

Someone from Australia came to this blog and joined GetAFreelancer. He then posted a new project on GAF. The project he posted has these paid add-ons: featured project; this costs him $29, hidden bids; this costs $1, and lastly, nonpublic project which costs him $3. A total of $33 project fee. Is my math correct? LOL

Ok, since this new member of GetAFreelancer joined GAF through the GAF ads that I have in this blog. As mentioned by GAF, I am to be credited with 90% of the total project fees. That is exactly what happened; 90% of $33 is $29.7 and I have this amount credited to my GAF account. By Friday next week, I’ll be able to get it into my paypal account.

This is pretty simple and straight forward system of making money online. As mentioned, when you use GAF ads, show these ads in your website or blog, you will be on your way to make serious money even while you are asleep.

So now, get onto it. Sign up at GAF so you’ll be able to use GAF ads on your website. Once you have the ads on your website, all you need is traffic. If you have a good traffic then you are all set. Make that blog a money-making-machine.

Needless to say, this one does not require you to have some programming or web designing skills. You may be someone blogging for some other topics really far from programming yet, GAFcash program is yours to grab. GAFcash is for all netrepreneurs. GAFcash is for all of us who wants to make money online. GAFcash is for bloggers, webmasters, small to large online businesses. Have a small block of GAF ads on your website and monetize the traffic to your website.

This post ends here but the excitement in sharing this to you all has just started. I look forward to see your own success stories with GAFcash.

Just today, someone asked me of this question and added, "should I go back to school and learn what HTML is?"

I didn't say, 'Yes, you should go back to school and learn HTML then you'll be a good web designer and web developer'. Instead I answered, 'it takes ones heart for it'. School is good but time at school is so limited and it's not possible to learn everything you want.

With a heart for web designing and web development work, you'll learn it on your own. The internet has a huge collection of tutorials. Read tutorials and try things on your own. If you came across something that's new, try doing it and see how it works.

By trying things you learn. We all know this phrase, 'experience is the best teacher'. Don't be afraid to see what happens if you try this or you do that. Great scientists went through a hundred tries before coming up with something useful.
